Just One Click……
Waiting….waiting….should I check? No I”ll wait a little longer...nope can’t wait gotta look!
It’s the same every time. The psychological tug of war that happens every time you post your art. First there is the mental anguish of should I or should I not post. Then once you’ve convinced yourself that it's good enough to share, then you have to convince yourself that you're happy with it and it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Wrong! Oh silly self, of course it matters otherwise why post at all?
Do creative souls have fragile egos? Maybe, probably. It does create quite a conundrum. No matter how you express your creativity, at some point you have the desire to share it. Not so much to say “Ha see what I can do” but more to share your interpretation of how you see, hear, feel or connect with what you are creating. Your own personal vision. That’s where it gets sticky. It’s personal, but still you want to share it.
Bravely you put it out there. Somewhere on social media. All the sites have it, that little icon that means “like”. You are now at the mercy of the click.
Having had this conversation with others the thought process seems to be pretty much the same. My daughter informed me that my “likes” for her art didn’t count, after all I was family we’re pretty much are required to “like”. My response was “maybe, but how bad would it be if we didn’t?” Social Media is FAST, you have to be able to grab the scrolling attention of a world inundated with constant visual stimulation. How many times have I scrolled by something that I thought I would go back to & “like”, but didn’t. How many times have I giggled at a post, it brightened my day, but still I didn’t click “like”. Oh the anguish, should I insinuate myself into someone else’s post, by clicking, does that signify that my opinion counts? Or that they even want to hear my opinion? This is the insecurity of not being born in the internet world. So I tell myself, get over it. It’s no big deal. After all it’s about putting yourself out there, being part of a bigger world. Be supportive, remember to click what you “like”. Don’t fret over how many “likes” you get, or who didn’t click. It’s just a post, it’s not Important that you didn’t get 2 gazillion “likes”, that you didn’t go viral. It’s not like you put your SOUL on display, it’s just a silly little post, be gone in 5 minutes, it’s just not a big deal. Wait...was that a notification??
